La Brea Tar Pits

Mae wanted to go to LaBrea Tar Pits and our family loves that place.  The Tar pits, the museum, and the park keep us busy for hours.

One of the favorite things to do at the Museum is to log roll or race down the hill.

The museum is right next to the LA Contemporary Art Museum and we walked right through a noodley art installation.

Of course Don wanted to find a geocache.

And what was Sonic doing all day?  Enjoying a day at doggy day care annoying the heck out of this black dog :)

A Very Happy Thanksgiving

We had a very Happy Thanksgiving and so much to be thankful for this year.

Here's a little treat courtesy of Quinn with a grand finish.  He learned this song at school.  You can watch it larger on you tube right here.

The Earth is good to me
I'm thankful to the earth for giving me the things I need
The sun and the rain and the big oak tree
The earth is good to me

We've arranged for some really great weather for Mae's visit.  It was close to 85 degrees on Thanksgiving Day so it only made sense to eat outside.  We ate early so that we could enjoy the last of the sunny day.

Sunday in Ventura

We planned our Sunday in Ventura.

We started our day at the HUGE flea market where we did alot of looking but no buying.  Then lunch in the little town on Ventura.

I had heard about a hike at the Ventura Botanical Gardens.  We made a quick stop at the Visitors Center for more information and they directed us to this park with a panoramic view over Camarillo, Oxnard, and Ventura....all the way out to the Channel Islands.   These pictures don't do it justice.  It was amazing and I'm shocked that we didn't know about this place.

Quinn wanted to go on an adventure so Don and Quinn went in search of a geocache.  I went in search of the view :)

There is a 1 mile meandering hike that goes to the bottom.  Mae drove the car to the bottom and Quinn, Don and I took the trail.  You can see how it switches back and forth and there's Mae in the bottom left of the parking lot.

Mae and Her Guys

Making Dinner

Lately I've been encouraging Quinn to do more things for himself.  Like making his own dinner.  We're getting there.

Last Soccer Game

Quinn had his last soccer game of the season on Saturday and he did great!!  He kept his head in the game and showed so much enthusiasm.

Coach Randy really wanted Quinn to score a goal so he kept Quinn posted by the goal the whole game.  There were a couple of times Quinn almost scored but it wasn't meant to be.  But he had so much fun and it was great to see him really involved in the game.  In our eyes it was a great success!!

After the game the team had a pizza party and got their trophies.

Quinn was fortunate to have such a great coach for his first season of soccer.  Coach Randy really worked with Quinn on his soccer game and was always positive and encouraging.

Here's to our first soccer season with hopefully more to come!

Mae is Here!

Quinn's Mae arrived this week for a visit and a nice warm break from Chicago.   It's great to have her here and Quinn and Sonic can't get enough of her :)

On Wednesday Quinn went to a friend's house after school so Barbara and I had a little extra time and took advantage by spending the afternoon in Santa Monica.

There were alot of characters out and about and I saw this odd grandma with her walker.  Then I saw her do a cartwheel over her walker.  And then I saw the film crew.  I think they might have been shooting Bad Grandma?  Similar to Bad Grandpa.

After a walk down pier we went to the Third Street Promenade for a little window shopping.   The christmas tree is up!!

What a beautiful afternoon!

1st Grade Thanksgiving Friendship Feast

On Friday the 1st Grade Class at Quinn's school had a Thanksgiving Friendship Feast.  It also happened to be Student Council Spirit Day so the kids could wear PJ's and take in their favorite stuffed animal.  A busy day!

All the kids picked a Native American name and this was Quinn's.

They made placemat for their feast.

Their beautiful table set up by the very talented Room Parents :)  Mae is here for a visit so she helped out and got to see Quinn's class and meet his teacher and some of the parents.

Here they come.  Let the chaos begin!

Don Runs!

A couple of months ago Don decided to run in the Ventura half marathon which is 13.1 miles.  He's been training for it and really enjoying it.

The big weekend was here and it was time to run.   His race started at 7:15 am.

Here's a look off of our balcony and you can see Don in his bright orange shirt walking towards the starting line.

Don expected to pass the hotel around 8:30 am so Quinn and I went out to cheer him on!  Here he comes.  It was interesting because the "boardwalk" was open to the general public.  And the race included a 5k, 10k, half marathon and full marathon so it was a busy place with the usual Sunday crowd and all the various racers.

The route made a U-Turn and finished back near the starting line.  Don's goal was to finish under 2 hours.

He started 2 minutes after the first group so his time was about 1:55.  Wahooooo!!!

Looking good!!!

Quinn and I are so proud of him accomplishing his goal!  Although based on post-race aches and pains that may be his last half marathon....but HE DID IT!

Weekend in Ventura

Don ran a half marathon in Ventura in Sunday so we decided to make a weekend out of it.  We went down Saturday afternoon and spent the night.

Of course we took our bikes and went on a nice long ride beside the ocean.  Quinn continues to gain confidence and improve his skills.

Pit stop at the turn around point.  Quinn going on a little adventure.

We had a nice view from our room and you know how I love my sunsets.

I went down to the beach to take some pictures and saw this.  A husband arranged for a catered sunset dinner on the beach.  Awe :)

Even after the sunset the surfers were still out there.

Our hotel on the left and a view towards the town of Ventura.  And yes, I am loving my out of focus pics these days.

My twinkle toes on Sunday morning.

While Don was recovering from the race Quinn and I spent some time on the beach.

Quinn loves this dragonfly!
