The Magician's Cape

I'm currently taking an online photography class called The Magician's Cape which is all about putting yourself in the picture and capturing your daily life.

I'm using tripods and timers and intervalometers to capture myself in the shot.  Here are some favorites from this week.

I wanted to capture the routine of tying Quinn's belt for TKD and we got a surprise ambush.

We had to do a smiling self portrait.  Not so easy but I'm happy with the way it came out.  I wanted to capture the cast too because it is currently part of my story and hopefully comes off tomorrow.

All District Band Concert

Quinn's band had their big performance last night at the Thousand Oaks Civic Arts Plaza.  This is the highlight of the semester.

Quinn and his percussionist buddy Dan.

Before the show.

A gaggle of boys.  (This isn't my picture but shared from a friend.)  You might remember that Quinn had a high school student give him some sax tutoring.   The brother of the tutor is on the far left of the pic.   Love all the ties!

The program from last night.  The district has about 4 nights of performances.  Last night was Quinn's elementary school and the middle and high school where he will attend.

We couldn't really see Quinn but knew the general vicinity of where he was sitting.  And after their first song Quinn did his signature move and lifted his sax in the air :)

The kids were pretty jazzed up!

Hey, I captured Quinn in this pic.  Can't you see him?

Oh, there he is!

It was pretty interesting to hear the beginning band, then the advanced (elementary) band, middle school and then high school.  There was a HUGE jump in skill level from the advanced elementary to the middle school and they are only a year or two apart.  All three schools are known for their outstanding music programs.

Here's a pic that another friend shared so it's not my picture.  But a great view from above of the stage.   It was great for the younger kids to see in to their future and for the older kids to see how far they've come.  Most of the high school kids were seniors and this was their last performance together.

The last song all the bands performed together, Ode to Joy.  (This video was shared from a friend.)  If you jump to 1:20 you can hear the transition from elementary to middle and jump to 2:20 you can hear middle school to high.

New Artistic Cast

My friend Amy wanted to take a crack at decorating my third and hopefully last cast and I was all for it.

Her inspiration was Gustav Klimt who painted The Kiss.

You can definitely see the inspiration in my cast.  We chose a different painting for her to work from but there are so many similarities.

And the best part is that I got a glow in the dark cast so I have a built in night light!

After this cast comes off, I have about a month in a wrist support but I will be able to take it off around the house.  I'm looking forward to being cast free!

Getting Outside

Getting outside to make some oobleck.  When I was a kid it was called cornstarch and water.    This is a bucket full of 5# of cornstarch and water.    Begin the experiments -- nerf darts, soccer ball, hammer, etc.

Getting outside for an afterschool walk with Sonic down to the fire road.

Basketball, Sonic, Quinn.

Getting outside for a morning walk with Sonic.

Really appreciating the beauty around me.

Dual Swim Meet

Don and Quinn swam in their first swim meet together.  It was a fun event with the Daland Swim Team being split into two groups:  Pink Team and Black Team.  Don and Quinn were drafted for the black team.

The Black Team getting pumped up!  That's the main swim coach next to Don.

So proud of these guys showing up and participating!

All the swimmers warming up.  You can spot Don by his tattoo at the bottom of the picture.

All the swimmers.

Don swam in 5 events and Quinn in 4.  The trick is to write your event number, heat, and lane on your arm.

And they're off! Don is in lane 4.  The high flying woman in the pink cap next to Don is Coach Adrienne who usually coaches Quinn's team.  There were a handful of adult swimmers and most of them swam in college and were pretty good.

Don crushed it in the 50 yard breast stroke and won his race!

Quinn's favorite stroke is the back stroke and he came in 2nd in his race.  Wahoo!

Swim meets seem to go on forever.  So this one was chillaxin!

Cheering on his dad!  What a great day!

Mother's Day Hike

I got a new cast today which is shaped in a way that makes it hard to type.  So my posts will be short on words and long on pictures.

Mother's  Day hike.  It's our 7 of 10 for the challenge.  At this point not sure we will do all 10 before May 31.

That was a long, hot walk back up hill.  Q & I are done.

Anniversary & Mother's Day Weekend

It was a big weekend at our house.

First up, our 18th Wedding Anniversary!!!   Quinn spent the night with a friend and Don & I had a nice evening out.

Sunday was my YES day -- Mother's Day!  It was a low key day but I took advantage of my yes-day and got some family pics.  You might remember that pink shirt I wore in previous years photos.

Here's our 2014 selves.
